Overall, it's worth playing through once, especially if you can find it on sale. The story was awful compared to 2013 and several of the returning characters-including the main villain-bore little resemblance to their former selves.Ģ016 does a few things well, particularly the visuals and fast-paced combat. Even at the highest difficulty, the drops were lousy. I love Borderlands, but the loot system sucked for SW. You revisit the same levels over and over with little variation in the missions. The level randomization didn't serve the gameplay. I even appreciated the visuals of the skill system (Lo Wang's tattoos).Ģ016 deviated from this winning formula in all the wrong ways. The boss fights felt epic and sold the idea that you were battling ancient gods on their home turf. There was still a healthy dose of juvenile humor (it wouldnt be Lo Wang otherwise), but the story had a surprising amount of soul. The levels were linear but that works for many games.

Shadow Warrior 2013 as a reboot was perfect in all the ways that DNF failed. You use 3 materials with +Crit Dmg and end up with a fire upgrade. The worst part is the RNG while crafting.

Also the named mini-bosses should have been uniquely modeled and designed. You have to get the same area to do a side quest for Kamiko and the twins but you have to get there two separate fucking times. So fucking irritating and so much filler. 4 different times I had to fight my way to Xing. I would also like to point out how repetitive the game gets. And the ending, wtf was the eding? Kamiko just upped and decided to sacrifice herself? Kamiko is your generic do-gooder and that' it. Hoji was fucking awesome and his backstory really helped you to get immersed in the game. It felt like the storytelling in general took a big backseat this time around, honestly - outside of the text logs you can find as random drops that expand on the worldbuilding, there was just far less of it, and it was less well done. The fact that a lot of her characterisation came in the form of conversations that you could miss out on entirely (I personally have a huge number of missions where I'm missing one or more of them) really didn't help, and felt like a weird design choice after the first game did pretty well with the graphic novel style cutscenes and just making the banter mandatory. Whereas in 1 I found myself kinda surprised by how interested I ended up becoming in Hoji's backstory and what had happened with regards to his world, I never really found myself caring about Kamiko at all. Kamiko was just not a good replacement for Hoji, having less entertaining chemistry with Wang as well as generally being less funny and interesting.
